EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Stalker: A Grim End for a Valiant Warship Amidst the rusting hulks of the Pounds scrapyard in Portsmouth, the skeletal frame of HMS Stalker stands as a testament to the inexorable passage of time. Once a proud and powerful Mark III Landing Ship, Tank (LST), this vessel, previously known as LST 3515, had seen its fair share of battles and triumphs during its military career. Circa 2006, HMS Stalker, now awaiting disposal, was transformed into the source of a poison gas leak in the Silent Witness episodes 55 and 56. In these gripping dramas, the ship was given the fictitious name 'Galle' and portrayed as a derelict flight deck of a flight plane carrier. The eerie silence that enveloped the ship's decaying structure added to the suspense and intrigue of the storyline. The Mark III LST was a versatile and essential asset in the Royal Navy's arsenal, designed to transport troops, vehicles, and supplies to the shoreline. Its distinctive bow ramp enabled the swift and efficient loading and unloading of military equipment. However, as the years took their toll, HMS Stalker, like many of her comrades, was consigned to the scrapyard. The aviation community may recall that HMS Stalker was not the only military vessel to find a new lease of life in the world of fiction. Its ghostly presence in Silent Witness served as a poignant reminder of the rich history and legacy of the Royal Navy's valiant warships. This haunting image of HMS Stalker, captured by The Peter Butt Aviation Collection, offers a glimpse into the past, evoking memories of the courage and determination of the men and women who served on these mighty vessels. The rusted metal and faded paint tell a story of their own, a tale of duty, honor, and the inexorable march of time.
