EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Knavesborough Viaduct: From Tragedy to Triumph" 2. Caption: This evocative pencil drawing captures the picturesque market town of Knavesborough in North Yorkshire, with its iconic 24.5-metre high gritstone viaduct spanning the River Nidd. The scene is set in the early 20th century, with the town's quaint houses and shops nestled beneath the imposing structure. 3. The history of Knavesborough's viaduct is steeped in intrigue and resilience. In 1848, as the viaduct neared completion, it tragically collapsed into the River Nidd, believed to be due to poor workmanship. The incident caused widespread shock and disappointment, delaying the opening of the railway line and incurring significant costs. 4. Undeterred, the community rallied together, and a replacement viaduct was commissioned. Made from stone quarried at Abbey Crags, the new structure was opened in 1851 and cost an impressive £9,803. The determination and perseverance of the people of Knavesborough ensured that their town remained connected to the wider railway network, paving the way for economic growth and prosperity. 5. This drawing, part of the March of the Women Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the resilience and spirit of the people of Knavesborough and their remarkable feat of engineering. The viaduct remains a testament to their ingenuity and the enduring charm of this beautiful market town in North Yorkshire.
