EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the historic moment when Stephanus Johannes Paulus "Paul" Kruger, the renowned South African politician and President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900, disembarked at the French port of Marseilles in 1900. Kruger, who came to international prominence as the face of the Boer cause against Britain during the Second Boer War, is surrounded by Dr Leyds and Mr Eloff, two prominent Boer officials. Dressed in Victorian-era male clothing, Kruger exudes a sense of determination and resilience, having fled his homeland after the defeat of the Boer forces in the war. The Gelderland, a Dutch steamship, can be seen in the background, having brought Kruger and his companions from the Netherlands. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the complex political and military history of South Africa in the late 19th century.
