EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Martin I of Aragon, also known as Martín el Humano (Martin the Humane), born in 1356 and reigning from 1396 to 1410 as King of Aragon, Valencia, Sardinia, Corsica, and Count of Barcelona. Later, in 1409, he became King of Sicily as Martin II. Martin is renowned for his humane and ecclesiastical policies, which set him apart during the tumultuous 14th century. Dressed in full armor, Martin is shown riding a horse, holding a lance in his right hand. His helmeted head is turned towards the left, gazing into the distance, suggesting a thoughtful and contemplative monarch. The intricate details of his armor, including the embossed designs and the delicate fringes, reflect the advanced craftsmanship of the late medieval period. This engraving, created in the 19th century, is part of the collection at the Museo Militar in Madrid. It has undergone later coloration to enhance its visual appeal. The image provides a glimpse into the grandeur and majesty of the medieval monarchs, offering a window into the history of Aragon, Catalonia, and the broader Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. Martin I's reign was marked by a period of relative peace and stability, during which he strengthened the power of the Aragonese monarchy and expanded its territories. His humane and ecclesiastical policies, which included the protection of the Jewish and Muslim populations, set him apart from many of his contemporaries and contributed to his enduring legacy.
