Annual Britton Lang Matheson Nellie Penrose Hutin

EDITORS COMMENTS
Matheson Lang and his wife Nellie Hutin Britton pose for a photograph during the 1911 edition of the Penrose Annual, an influential publication showcasing the latest trends in art, literature, and culture. Matheson Lang (1879-1948), a Canadian actor and writer, gained recognition for his work on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Toronto, Lang began his career on the stage in the United States before returning to Canada to found the Elite Theatre in Montreal. He later moved to London, England, where he continued to act and write for the stage and screen. Nellie Hutin Britton (1876-1965), an accomplished actress in her own right, was also born in Canada. She made her professional debut in 1898 and went on to appear in numerous productions in both Canada and the United States. The couple married in 1908 and remained together until Lang's death in 1948. The Penrose Annual, published by the London-based Penrose Publishing Company, was a prestigious and influential publication that featured articles, essays, and illustrations by leading figures in the arts and sciences. The inclusion of this photograph of Lang and Britton in the 1911 edition is a testament to their growing prominence in the world of Canadian and international culture. This photograph, from the Peter & Dawn Cope Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a rare glimpse into the personal lives of these two influential figures and their enduring partnership. The image captures the couple's elegance and sophistication, as well as their shared passion for the arts. Whether on stage or in print, Matheson Lang and Nellie Hutin Britton left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of their time.
