1. Title: Fragment of a Mid-14th Century Medical Text: A Possible Adaptation of the Universal Canons of Johannes Mesue the Younger by Pietro D'Abano This image showcases six folios from a medical text, dating back to the mid-14th century. The text's identity remains uncertain but has been suggested as an adaptation of the Universal Canons of Johannes Mesue the Younger by Pietro D'Abano. The parchment, which has yet to be positively identified, is adorned with a main body text written in a Gothic textualis rotunda in dark brown, arranged in two columns. The text is meticulously decorated with alternating red and blue paragraph marks, large red and blue capitals, and intricate pen flourishes in red and purple. The folios have been carefully photographed in their entirety, as well as the inner and outer sides of any folds, providing a comprehensive view of this precious medieval manuscript fragment. The Universal Canons, authored by Johannes Mesue the Younger, was a widely used medical compendium during the Middle Ages. Pietro D'Abano, an Italian philosopher and physician, is known for his extensive commentaries on various medical texts, including this possible adaptation. The text's beautiful calligraphy and decorative elements are characteristic of the period, reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into producing such works during the Middle Ages. This fragment serves as a testament to the rich history of medical knowledge and the artistic achievements of the medieval period. The intricate design and the Latin text, which remains a fascinating mystery, invite further research and exploration into the world of medieval medicine and manuscripts.
