EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in Norwegian royal history during World War II. The image shows Crown Princess Martha of Norway (1901-1954), with her three children, Prince Harald (later King Harald V, b. 1937), Princess Ragnhild (1930-2012), and Princess Astrid (b. 1932), in exile in New York City in 1940. As the Nazi forces invaded Norway on April 9, 1940, the royal family was forced to flee their homeland. They initially sought refuge in the United Kingdom but were eventually granted asylum in the United States due to concerns over the safety of their children. The family lived in relative anonymity in New York, trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for their children amidst the chaos of wartime. The photograph shows the family in their modest apartment, with Crown Princess Martha holding her youngest daughter, Princess Astrid, while her eldest son, Prince Harald, looks on. Princess Ragnhild, the middle child, sits on the floor, playing with a toy. The simple domestic scene belies the profound historical significance of the moment. The Norwegian monarchy, which had been in place since 1814, was facing an uncertain future. Despite the challenges of exile, the royal family remained committed to their country and its people. They continued to represent Norway abroad and worked to support the Norwegian resistance movement back home. The resilience and determination of this family in the face of adversity are a testament to their enduring legacy and the strength of the Norwegian people.
