EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created by Lemaitre, Masson, and Monnin for the Historia de Turquia by Joseph Marie Jouannin and Jules Van Gaver in 1840, offers a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur and complexity of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century. The image depicts two prominent figures of the Ottoman administration: the Janissary Agha (left) and Kadi Lechke (right). The Janissary Agha, dressed in the traditional attire of the Janissary Corps, holds a scepter in one hand and a turban in the other. As the top military official of the Ottoman Empire, he commanded the Janissary Corps, an elite military force that was once the backbone of the Ottoman army. His impressive costume, adorned with gold embroidery and intricate designs, reflects his high rank and status. Kadi Lechke, the ruling judge of Turkish territories, is shown wearing the traditional attire of a Kadi, or Islamic judge. He wears a long, flowing robe with a red fez and a white turban. With a stern expression on his face, he holds a scroll in one hand, symbolizing the laws and decrees he is responsible for upholding. The intricate details of their clothing, from the rich fabrics to the intricate embroidery, provide a window into the Ottoman society and its unique customs and traditions. This engraving not only captures the essence of the Ottoman Empire's power and grandeur but also highlights the important roles of its functionaries in maintaining order and upholding the law.
