EDITORS COMMENTS
This high relief sculpture depicts Paul the Apostle, believed to have been born around 5 or 6 AD in Tarsus, Cilicia, and martyred around 64 or 67 AD in Rome. The sculpture, created in the Romanesque style during the 12th century, is the work of renowned Catalan sculptor Ramon de Bianya. It is currently housed on the exterior facade of the Church of St. Paul of Narbonne in Anglesola, a small town in the Urgell region of Catalonia, Spain. Paul, who was originally named Saul, was a devout Pharisee and persecutor of early Christians before his conversion on the road to Damascus. After his transformation, he became a tireless evangelist, spreading the message of Christianity to the Gentiles, or non-Jewish people. In this striking depiction, Paul is shown holding a meele, a type of bladed weapon, symbolizing his role as a warrior for the faith. The intricate details of his garments, the folds of his cloak, and the texture of his beard and hair are all hallmarks of the Romanesque style, which emphasized the three-dimensional representation of figures and the use of bold, expressive forms. The Church of St. Paul of Narbonne, built in the late 16th century, is a testament to the rich history of Christianity in Europe during the Middle Ages. Paul's portrait, with its powerful and dynamic composition, serves as a reminder of the enduring influence of this remarkable figure on the development of Western civilization.
