EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative engraving, Peter III of Aragon, also known as Peter the Great or Pedro el Grande (c. 1239-1285), is depicted on horseback, regally attired and brandishing a sword. Born in the House of Barcelona, Peter succeeded his father, James I, as Count of Barcelona in 1276 and later became King of Aragon in 1281, as well as King of Valencia in 1238 under the name Peter I. The image captures the essence of the medieval monarch, with his helmet adorned with the royal Bars symbol, a squared crown on his head, and a large royal banner and shield at his side. The engraving, created in the 19th century and later colorized, showcases Peter's imposing presence as a feudal monarch during the European Middle Ages. Peter III is renowned for his military prowess and his efforts to expand the Kingdom of Aragon's territories. He played a significant role in the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors, and even led an unsuccessful campaign against Sicily in 1282. The engraving also highlights Peter's connections to Catalonia and the broader region, as evidenced by the Catalan language inscription at the bottom, which reads "Pedro III Rey de Aragon, Conde de Barcelona." This image offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Aragonese monarchy and the complex political landscape of medieval Europe. Despite the passage of centuries, Peter III's image remains an enduring symbol of power, courage, and determination, embodying the spirit of the medieval monarchs who ruled over Europe during the Middle Ages.
