EDITORS COMMENTS
Rear Admiral Percy W. Nelles (1892-1951) was a distinguished officer in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the Second World War. In this striking portrait, taken circa 1940, Rear Admiral Nelles is seen in full uniform, proudly wearing the insignia of his rank. The image captures the serious and determined expression on his face, reflecting the gravity of the times and the important role he played in Canada's naval defense. Born in England, Nelles immigrated to Canada in 1912 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a midshipman. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving in both World War I and II. During the Second World War, he played a key role in the development of the RCN's submarine service and was instrumental in establishing the Canadian Naval Officer Training Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Nelles' leadership and strategic planning were crucial in the defense of Canada's eastern coastline against potential enemy attacks. He was also involved in the planning and execution of several successful naval operations, including the invasion of Sicily and the Normandy landings. After the war, Nelles continued to serve in the RCN, eventually retiring in 1951 with the rank of Rear Admiral. This portrait is a testament to his dedication and service to his country, and serves as a reminder of the important role the Royal Canadian Navy played in Canada's history during the 1940s.
