EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts a Ribauldequin, a late medieval volley gun used during the 14th and 15th centuries. The Ribauldequin, also known as a rabauld, ribauldkin, or ribault, was a unique and formidable piece of artillery that set the foundation for the development of modern firearms. This gun was characterized by its multiple small-caliber iron barrels arranged parallel on a platform. The barrels were typically compound, meaning they were made up of several smaller barrels stacked together, which increased the overall length and effectiveness of the gun. The Ribauldequin was a significant improvement over earlier forms of artillery, such as the trebuchet and the ballista, as it allowed for a greater rate of fire and a wider area of destruction. The gun was mobile, mounted on wheels or a sled, and could be easily transported and repositioned on the battlefield. This mobility, combined with its devastating volley of small projectiles, made the Ribauldequin a formidable weapon in the middle ages. This particular image of a Ribauldequin is from the Museo Militar in Madrid, Spain, and dates back to 1883. The engraving has been later colorated to enhance its visual appeal. The Ribauldequin remains an important symbol of the military innovation and ingenuity of the late medieval period, and continues to fascinate historians, military enthusiasts, and students of history alike.
