EDITORS COMMENTS
Immerse yourself in the haunting history of the RMS Titanic with this image of a silver cigar case recovered from the wreckage of the legendary ocean liner. The cigar case, now a cherished artifact, was among the items retrieved from the bodies of victims by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett in 1912. The rectangular cigar case, with rounded corners, displays intricate engravings on its front, top, and back. The front features a central vacant cartouche within a floral and foliate surround, with ivy leaves at the top third, flower heads with six petals and trailing leaf trefoils in the middle third, and cinquefoil flower heads with larger flower heads at each corner in the bottom third. The case is adorned with a silver thumb piece, stamped with a lion passant, and a full set of hallmarks for Birmingham 1909, along with the sponsor's mark W.A for William Adams Ltd. The sides of the case are plain, while the back boasts a diagonal band of continuous C scrolls within line-punched borders, with leaf trefoils at the top left and large foliate scrolls at the bottom right. The interior of the case is gilded and features guide frames for an elastic strap (missing) and a steel spring clip. The cigar case, which measures approximately 4 3/4ins. long, 3 1/2ins. wide (3.7/16ins. at the small side clip), and approximately 13/16ins. - 31/32ins. deep, is in good condition overall for its age, with some tarnish and verdigris-type tarnishing near the length of the hinge and near the spring clip and thumb piece. The case contains two pieces of stained off-white paper. This poignant relic from the Titanic serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost during that fateful night in 1912.
