EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph print captures a pivotal moment in the life of Saint Francis Borgia, the Marquis of Lombay and later 4th Duke of Gandia. The scene depicts Francisco de Borja's profound renunciation of worldly pleasures after coming face to face with the putrefied corpse of Empress Isabella of Portugal, wife of Emperor Charles I of Spain. Isabella's body was being transported to Granada at the time, where this powerful transformation took place.
The image is a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of earthly life and the vanity that comes with it. Saint Francis Borgia's emotional reaction to witnessing decay serves as a catalyst for his spiritual awakening and eventual dedication to serving God as a Jesuit superior general.
Illustrated by Moreno Carbonero and featured in Miguel Morayta's "Historia General de Espana," this historical depiction from 1890 captures a moment that forever changed the course of Saint Francis Borgia's life. It is a visual representation not only of his personal conversion but also an emblematic reflection on mortality and the pursuit of higher spiritual truths.
This print invites viewers to contemplate their own relationship with material possessions and transient existence, urging them to seek deeper meaning beyond superficial pursuits.
