This vintage lantern slide depicts the dramatic scene of destroyers sinking off the Island of Fara in Scapa Flow on the morning of June 21, 1919. The aftermath of World War I, the German Navy, under the command of Admiral Ludwig von Reuter, had been interned in Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, Scotland since the end of the war in November 1918. In accordance with the Treaty of Versailles, the German ships were to be handed over to the Allied powers. However, on the morning of June 21, 1919, in an act of defiance, Admiral von Reuter gave the order for the German fleet to scuttle itself. The scene captured in this photograph shows the destruction of the German destroyers as they sink into the waters of Scapa Flow. The Victorian and Edwardian era, with its grandeur and elegance, seems to clash with the chaotic and destructive events unfolding in the image. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in world history.
