EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Seven Dials Column standing proudly in Weybridge, Surrey, a cherished reminder of London's rich history. The original Seven Dials Column, which once graced the bustling streets of Covent Garden in London, was re-erected in Weybridge in 1928 as a tribute to the Duchess of York, who passed away in 1820. The Duchess, whose real name was Princess Augusta Sophia of Wales, was a beloved figure in Surrey, having spent much of her later years living at her estate, Oatlands Palace. The Seven Dials Column, a striking architectural landmark, was originally built in 1774 to mark the site of seven roads intersecting in Covent Garden. The column's intricate design, featuring seven dials displaying the hours, was a popular meeting place for Londoners. When the column was dismantled in 1874, many Londoners were saddened by its loss, and the idea of re-erecting it in Weybridge began to take shape. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, shows the Seven Dials Column standing tall and proud in a tranquil setting. The playground surrounding the column is filled with children at play, adding a sense of homely warmth to the scene. The association between the column and the Duchess of York, as well as its connection to London and Surrey, makes it a beloved symbol of English heritage. This photograph, taken by Terry Parker, is a beautiful testament to the enduring power of history and tradition.
