EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative engraving depicts two Soldiers of Acostamientos, a military force composed of vassals who served the Spanish monarchy during the Middle Ages in exchange for a salary called Acostamiento. The left figure is a Culveriner, identified by his distinctive helmet with a wide brim and a large caliber culverin, a type of early firearm, slung over his shoulder. The culverin, a heavy and powerful weapon, required a significant amount of strength and skill to operate effectively. The right figure is a Crossbowman, easily recognizable by his hooded tunic and the crossbow, a precision weapon, held in his hands. Crossbowmen were highly valued for their ability to deliver accurate and deadly shots from a distance, making them an essential component of medieval European armies. Both soldiers are shown wearing heavy armor, including smocks, tunics, and shoes, designed to protect them from the harsh realities of battle. Their helmets, hoods, and footwear reveal the intricate details of their armor, which was often decorated with elaborate designs and symbols of their noble houses. The Acostamientos system was an essential aspect of the feudal system in Spain during the Middle Ages. The vassals, who were bound by a personal bond of loyalty to their monarch, were obliged to defend their lands and provide military service when called upon. This engraving offers a glimpse into the daily life of these soldiers, who stood ready to defend their kingdom and uphold the honor of their vassalage. This image, originally created in the 19th century and later colorized, is now part of the Museo Militar's collection in Madrid. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and military traditions that have shaped Europe and the world.
