10th Amos Commentary Copy Fragment Fragments Half Latin Manuscript Parchment Prophet Right Hand Sancti Vertically
EDITORS COMMENTS
This fragmented parchment leaf showcases a portion of St. Jerome's Commentary on the Prophet Amos, dating back to the 10th century. The leaf has been meticulously cut vertically down the center, leaving only the right-hand side of the text intact. The text is taken from the Commentariorum Sancti Hieronymi In Amos Prophetae, a seminal work in the history of biblical exegesis. St. Jerome (342-420 AD), an influential early Christian scholar and priest, is renowned for his translation of the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate. This commentary on the Old Testament book of Amos is a testament to his deep understanding of both the Latin language and the prophetic texts. The text on the leaf is written in a neat, angular script, typical of the Insular script tradition, which was popular in the British Isles during the early Middle Ages. The fragment's age is evident in the faded ink and the slight wear on the edges of the parchment. Despite its age and fragmentary state, the text remains remarkably legible, a testament to the meticulous care taken in producing medieval manuscripts. The fragment's provenance is unknown, but it is a reminder of the rich literary and intellectual heritage of the medieval period. The study and interpretation of biblical texts, such as the Commentary on Amos, were central to the intellectual life of the time, and this fragment offers a tantalizing glimpse into that world. This fragment serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of the physical record of our past and the importance of preserving and studying these precious remnants of history.
