EDITORS COMMENTS
This etching captures the stunning architecture of St. Mary Le Strand, a historic church located at the eastern end of the Strand in Westminster, London. The current structure of this church dates back to 1714, designed by the renowned architect James Gibbs under the Commission for Building Fifty New Churches, an organization established by Act of Parliament in England in 1711. The church was rebuilt after being pulled down in 1549 by Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset. The intricate details of the church's facade are beautifully depicted in this etching, with its grand columns, intricate carvings, and ornate windows. The image, from the December 1920 volume of a colour magazine, was captured by the talented photographer Francis Edgar Dodd. This etching is a testament to the enduring beauty and historical significance of St. Mary Le Strand, a cherished landmark in the heart of London.
