EDITORS COMMENTS
This image transports us back in time to Sydney, Australia, in the year 1812. Taken from the eastern side of Sydney Cove, the photograph showcases a breathtaking view of the harbor and the bustling town beyond. On the extreme right, the distinctive silhouette of Isaac Nichol's warehouse can be seen on the water's edge. The site of the present-day Grosvenor Hotel once housed a windmill, which is visible in the upper right corner of the image. To the left of the windmill stands Old St. Phillip's Church, which was situated in front of the current church. The row of buildings on the skyline, between York and Clarence Streets, represents the Barracks, a significant military installation during that era. On the extreme left lies the Government House Grounds, providing a stark contrast to the urban landscape. This photograph, estimated to be taken circa 1921, offers a unique glimpse into Sydney's rich history, revealing the architectural and cultural evolution of the area over the centuries. The image is part of the March of the Women Collection, a valuable archive of historical photographs from Mary Evans Prints Online.
