EDITORS COMMENTS
Tadeusz Kosciuszko (1746-1817): A Polish-Lithuanian Statesman and General, National Hero in Poland and Belarus and a Key Figure in the American Revolution. This engraving by Lemaitre, Vernier, and Masson, taken from Charles Foster's "History of Poland," published in 1840, captures the image of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a man of great significance in both European and American history. Born in Poland-Lithuania, Kosciuszko rose to prominence as a military engineer, serving in the Polish-Lithuanian army and later in the French military. He gained international recognition for his role in the American Revolution, where he served as a major general and played a crucial role in the defense of Saratoga, a turning point in the war. In 1794, Kosciuszko led a national insurrection against the Russian and Prussian forces that had partitioned Poland-Lithuania. Although the uprising was ultimately unsuccessful, Kosciuszko's bravery and leadership earned him the title of national hero in Poland and Belarus. He later returned to the United States, where he was granted land in recognition of his service. In this portrait, Kosciuszko is depicted wearing a military cap adorned with a cross and a feather, as well as a scarf and a headdress. The engraving captures the intensity and determination in his gaze, reflecting the courage and conviction that marked his life and his contributions to history.
