Teesta Bridge, crossing the Teesta River in West Bengal, India, connecting Darjeeling and Kalimpong, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Teesta Bridge, a vital connection between Darjeeling and Kalimpong in West Bengal, India, constructed during the little-known Tibet Expedition of 1904. The British military campaign, led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, was authorized by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, with the objective of countering Russian influence and perceived advances towards the border. The expedition, as depicted in this fascinating album, began in India and resulted in several concessions from Tibet, then nominally under Chinese control. However, the worth of this endeavor remains debatable. This album, passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who served as ADC to Colonel Younghusband, offers a unique glimpse into the expedition. The photographs within the album capture various aspects of the campaign: military preparations, monasteries, breathtaking scenery, towns, and local populations. This image, in particular, highlights the Teesta Bridge, which served as a crucial link between the two regions. The bridge's construction marked a significant achievement for the expedition, enabling easier access to the remote regions of Tibet. The Tibet Expedition, though often overlooked in historical narratives, offers a fascinating insight into the complex geopolitical landscape of the early 20th century. This album, with its wealth of details, provides an invaluable record of this intriguing chapter in history.
