EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the second prototype of the Vickers Valiant, WB215 (Vickers 671 Valiant), during its impressive displays at the 1956 SBAC Farnborough International Airshow. The Valiant, a versatile military transport aircraft, was developed by the British aircraft manufacturer Vickers-Armstrongs. WB215 was a significant aircraft, as it was the first to showcase the de Havilland DSPR.4 Super Sprite Rocket Assisted Take-Off Gear (RATOG), which is visible under the wings, inboard of the undercarriage. The RATOG system provided an additional thrust during take-off, enabling the Valiant to shorten its take-off roll and increase its payload capacity. The Valiant made headlines at the airshow with its spectacular demonstrations of RATOG-assisted take-offs. The powerful rocket engines were ignited just before lift-off, providing an impressive burst of smoke and flame as the aircraft gained speed and lifted off the runway. The Valiant's successful demonstrations of RATOG technology marked a significant milestone in aviation history and showcased the UK's innovative capabilities in aeronautical engineering. This photograph, from The Peter Butt Aviation Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a unique glimpse into the past, capturing the excitement and innovation of the 1956 Farnborough International Airshow and the groundbreaking achievements of the Vickers Valiant WB215.
