View of Changu Lake (aka Tsomgo, Tsongmo or Changgu Lake), a glacial lake in East Sikkim, India, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the breathtaking View of Changu Lake, also known as Tsomgo, Tsongmo, or Changgu Lake, situated in East Sikkim, India. The image is taken from an intriguing album that offers a unique insight into a lesser-known campaign in world history: the British Tibet Expedition of 1904. The expedition, led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, was launched from India under the authorization of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India. The primary objective was to counteract the perceived Russian influence and advancement towards the border. The campaign resulted in several concessions from Tibet, then nominally under Chinese control, but the question of its worth remains debatable. This album, which has been passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who served as ADC to Colonel Younghusband, provides a fascinating glimpse into the expedition. The photographs within the album depict various aspects of the campaign, including military scenes, monasteries, landscapes, towns, and locals. The image of Changu Lake, with its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding snow-capped mountains, is a testament to the stunning beauty of the region. The album's historical significance lies not only in its visual appeal but also in the valuable insights it offers into this little-known chapter of history. The British Tibet Expedition of 1904 is a fascinating tale of geopolitics, military strategy, and cultural exchange. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and diverse landscapes that continue to captivate our imagination and curiosity.
