View from top of Dzong (a fortified hillside monastery) from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from the top of Dzong, a fortified hillside monastery, offers a breathtaking view of the landscape that was the backdrop to a little-known yet significant military campaign in 1904. The scene unfolds the aftermath of the Tibet Expedition, an endeavor launched from India under the authorization of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, with the primary objective of countering perceived Russian influence and advancement towards the border. The expedition, led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, gained notoriety for its successful capture of Lhasa, the spiritual capital of Tibet, which was nominally under Chinese control at the time. This album, a precious family heirloom, was passed down through generations from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who served as an Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Colonel Younghusband. The military escort commanding officer was Brigadier General James Macdonald. The photographs within this album provide a unique and fascinating glimpse into the expedition, revealing various aspects of the military, monasteries, scenic landscapes, towns, and locals. The images offer a testament to the historical significance of this expedition, which, despite its debated worth, remains an intriguing chapter in the annals of British colonial history in Asia. The Tibet Expedition, with its rich tapestry of events, offers a compelling narrative of diplomacy, military strategy, and cultural exchange. This photograph, taken from the vantage point of the Dzong, encapsulates the grandeur and mystery of the Tibetan landscape, inviting us to explore the stories that lie within the frames of this album.
