View of Gnatong, Sikkim, India, in the snow, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking view of Gnatong, Sikkim, India, in the snow, is a captivating image from an intriguing album that offers a unique insight into a little-known campaign in world history. The year was 1904, and the British military had embarked on an expedition to Tibet, sanctioned by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India. The primary objective was to counteract the perceived Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The Tibet Expedition, as it came to be known, began with a force that included Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald. This album, which has been passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, Younghusband's ADC, provides a visual record of the expedition's journey. The photographs in the album depict various elements of the expedition: military personnel braving the harsh terrain, monasteries that bore witness to centuries of Tibetan culture, scenic vistas that took the breath away, and bustling towns filled with curious locals. This image of Gnatong, with its snow-covered landscape, is a testament to the challenging conditions the expedition faced. The success of the Tibet Expedition remains a subject of debate. While the British were able to secure a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, the question of whether the effort was worth the return is still open to interpretation. Regardless, this album offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, providing a visual record of an expedition that helped shape the political landscape of the region for decades to come.
