EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures the elegant bond between Viscountess Daphne Weymouth, née Daphne Vivian, and her young daughter, Caroline Thynne, later known as Caroline Beaufort. Daphne, born in 1904, was a prolific English author, writing under the pen name Madame Yevonde. Her literary career flourished in the 1930s, a time when she also graced the social scene as a member of high society. In this image, taken in 1939, Daphne, dressed in a chic, high-necked blouse and pearls, cradles her daughter Caroline, then aged eleven, on her lap. Caroline, with her dark curls and bright eyes, gazes up at her mother with a look of admiration and love. The photograph beautifully encapsulates the tender moment between a mother and her child, as well as the sophistication and grace of the era. Daphne's first marriage was to the Hon. John Fielding, with whom she had two children, including Caroline. After their divorce, Daphne married the 6th Marquess of Bath, becoming Viscountess Weymouth. Her literary works, which included novels, short stories, and poetry, were well-received and continue to be read and cherished today. This portrait, a testament to the enduring bond between mother and daughter, is a poignant reminder of the past and the rich history it holds. The photograph, with its timeless beauty and evocative story, invites us to reflect on the experiences and emotions shared between these two remarkable women.
