Sadly, the fate of the Volta would take a tragic turn. On 27 November 1942, in the midst of World War II, the French Navy, in an act of defiance against the advancing German forces, scuttled the Volta and several other ships in the harbor of Toulon. This heroic act was an attempt to prevent the enemy from seizing the vessels and using them against the Allied forces. The Volta, along with other French naval vessels, was sunk in the shallow waters of the harbor, ensuring that they would remain out of the hands of the enemy. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the French Navy during this pivotal moment in history.
