EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative lantern slide image transports us back in time to the YMCA Alec's Hut in Aldershot during World War I. The hut, named after Alec Waugh, the first YMCA secretary in Aldershot, was one of many such facilities established by the Young Men's Christian Association to provide a 'home away from home' for soldiers and troops during their training. The Victorian and Edwardian eras, with their distinctive architectural styles, are beautifully captured in this photograph. The red-brick hut, adorned with ivy, stands proudly against a backdrop of rolling hills and lush greenery. Soldiers in uniforms, some with their heads bowed in quiet reflection, can be seen milling about the grounds. The YMCA huts were more than just temporary shelters; they offered a range of services including libraries, reading rooms, writing facilities, and recreational spaces. These amenities provided soldiers with much-needed respite from the rigors of military life and helped to boost morale. The lantern slide, a popular form of visual entertainment during the early 20th century, would have been projected onto a screen using a magic lantern, creating an immersive and captivating experience for audiences. This photograph, part of The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers us a glimpse into the past, allowing us to connect with a time when the world was forever changed by the events of World War I.
