EDITORS COMMENTS
7 October 1813: The Guards Enter France - A Momentous Moment in the Peninsular War This evocative print captures a pivotal moment in the Peninsular War, as British forces under the command of the Duke of Wellington pursue the French army out of Spain and into France. The French, having been driven back across the border, are met with unyielding determination from the British forces, who advance across the river and into the trees. The Peninsular War, which lasted from 1808 to 1814, was a significant campaign in the Napoleonic Wars. The conflict began when Napoleon Bonaparte's forces invaded Portugal and Spain, with the aim of extending his European empire. However, the tenacious resistance of the Spanish people and the arrival of British forces under Wellington turned the tide of the war. The Battle of the Pyrenees, fought on 25 July 1813, marked the beginning of the end for the French in the Peninsular War. The British and Spanish forces, having secured a victory, began their pursuit of the retreating French army. The print depicts this moment, as columns of infantry, including the iconic Grenadier Guards, advance across the river and into French territory. The successful invasion of France marked the beginning of the end for Napoleon's empire. The French army was defeated at the Battle of Toulouse on 10 April 1814, leading to Napoleon's abdication and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in France. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the momentous events that unfolded during the Peninsular War and the pivotal role that the British played in shaping the political landscape of Europe.
