Byrd Antarctic Expedition II - Dog team on dangerous ice
Byrd Antarctic Expedition II - Dog team crossing treacherous pressure ice. On his second expedition in 1934, Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) spent five winter months alone operating a meteorological station, Advance Base, from which he narrowly escaped with his life after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning from a poorly ventilated stove. This expedition is commemorated in a U.S. postage stamp issued at the time, and a considerable amount of mail using it was sent from Byrds base at Little America, including this actual postcard! (see lower section). A CBS radio station, KFZ, was set up on the base camp ship, the Bear of Oakland and The Adventures of Admiral Byrd were short wave radioed to Buenos Aires then relayed to New York. Date: 1934

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a determined dog team led by the legendary polar explorer, Richard E. Byrd, braves the dangers of treacherous pressure ice during the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II in 1934. Byrd, an American adventurer and explorer, spent five grueling winter months alone at Advance Base, operating a meteorological station. The harsh conditions pushed Byrd to the brink of survival after he suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a poorly ventilated stove. Byrd's second Antarctic expedition is commemorated in a U.S. postage stamp issued at the time, and a significant amount of mail was sent from Byrd's base at Little America. The expedition was also notable for the establishment of a CBS radio station, KFZ, on the base camp ship, the Bear of Oakland. The Adventures of Admiral Byrd were short-wave radioed to Buenos Aires and then relayed to New York, keeping the world informed of Byrd's groundbreaking exploration. This photograph captures the raw determination and courage of Byrd and his loyal team of dogs as they navigate the icy terrain, a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the spirit of adventure that drove Byrd and his team to push the boundaries of exploration in the polar regions during the 1930s.
