EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the historic moment when the German Battlecruiser Goeben, renamed Sultan Selim I, passed the Allied fleet as it headed for internment in the Bosphorus, Istanbul, Turkey during World War I. The Goeben, a powerful warship commissioned by the German Imperial Navy in 1911, had eluded capture for months, having made its way from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea in August 1914. With the Ottoman Empire still neutral in the conflict, the Goeben and its accompanying light cruiser, the Breslau, were able to enter the Bosphorus and take refuge in Turkish waters. However, in August 1916, under mounting pressure from the Allied powers, the Ottoman government agreed to intern the ships. The Goeben, now renamed Sultan Selim I in honor of the great Ottoman Sultan, was escorted out of the Dardanelles by a British warship and passed the Allied fleet as it made its way to the Bosphorus. The event marked a significant turning point in the war, as it effectively ended Germany's naval presence in the Black Sea and strengthened the Allied position in the region. This photograph, taken in 1916, provides a vivid record of this pivotal moment in military history. The Goeben, once a symbol of German naval power, now flies the Ottoman flag and is surrounded by the warships of the Allied fleet, a testament to the shifting alliances and complex diplomacy of the First World War.
