EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph transport us back in time to the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, also known as the "Century of Progress Exposition." Among the many wonders of this international event, the Shedd Aquarium stood out as a testament to America's ingenuity and love for nature. Opened in 1930, the Shedd Aquarium was the first inland aquarium with a large, public, indoor swimming pool. It was designed to replicate an underwater grotto, complete with cascading waterfalls and lush vegetation, creating an enchanting atmosphere for visitors. The Shedd Aquarium was a significant addition to the Fair, which aimed to showcase the progress and achievements of the United States and other nations. The building's distinctive architecture, featuring a series of arches and a glass dome, reflected the Art Deco style popular during the era. The aquarium was home to over 1,500 fish, representing 150 different species, and drew crowds from all corners of the world. This photograph, taken during the 1933 World's Fair, captures the Shedd Aquarium in all its glory. The reflection of the surrounding trees and the clear blue water create a stunning visual effect, while the people in the foreground add a sense of scale and human connection. Today, the Shedd Aquarium continues to inspire and educate visitors about the wonders of the natural world, making it an enduring symbol of Chicago's rich history and cultural heritage.
