EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grandeur and history of The New Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, London, as it stood in 1914. The New Academy, built in 1806, replaced the Old Royal Military Academy, which had been in use since 1741. The Old Academy is visible in the background, its red brick walls contrasting with the newer, more modern building in the foreground. The New Royal Military Academy was a significant institution in the British military, training officers for the army and the Royal Artillery. The Ordinance Store, located to the left of the image, was an essential part of the academy, housing the military's weapons and equipment. The photograph's composition draws the viewer's eye to the central dome of the New Academy, its intricate detailing and ornate design a testament to the architectural prowess of the time. The trees lining the street add a sense of tranquility and order, while the flags flying high on the buildings signify the military's proud and storied history. The New Royal Military Academy remained in use until 1939, when it was repurposed for other military functions. Today, the site is home to the Royal Artillery Barracks and the Royal Artillery Museum. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, a reminder of the rich history and tradition of the British military and its institutions.
