EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Norman Thompson NT 2B two-seat flying boat trainer (Serial No. N2560) beached on a wintry British coastline, circa 1918. Deliveries of this particular model commenced in December 1917, and were primarily used for training pilots on the south and east coasts of Britain during World War I. The NT 2B, manufactured by Norman Thompson Aviation Company, was an essential addition to the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service's fleets. Its enclosed cockpit, a feature of the last production batch, provided better protection against the elements and enhanced the training experience for the aviators. As seen in this image, the NT 2B was a versatile aircraft that could effectively operate in various conditions, including being beached on a shore. The two-seater flying boat trainer played a crucial role in preparing pilots for combat missions, particularly those involving maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the significant contributions made by the aviation industry during the First World War. The NT 2B, with its distinctive design and innovative features, stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the pioneering aviators who braved the challenges of wartime aviation.
