Cleopatra Needle Obelisk Obelisks Preparing

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of the late 19th century, an engineering marvel was underway as the second Cleopatra's Needle, an ancient Egyptian obelisk, was meticulously prepared for its extraordinary journey from the land of the pharaohs to the shores of the United States. This photograph, taken in 1880, captures the intricate process of readying the 69-foot-tall obelisk for its transatlantic voyage. The obelisk, adorned with hieroglyphics and intricate carvings, stands proudly amidst a bustling scene of construction and activity. Workers in top hats and overalls scurry around the structure, securing ropes and timber supports to ensure its safe transport. In the background, the iconic silhouettes of Victorian-era buildings add a sense of contrast and scale to the scene. The Cleopatra's Needle, originally erected in Heliopolis, Egypt, around 1450 BC, was one of three obelisks presented by the Egyptian government to the United Kingdom and the United States as a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange. The first Cleopatra's Needle was transported to London in 1878, and the second one was destined for New York City's Central Park. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the intricate planning and execution required to transport such a monumental artifact across continents and oceans. The second Cleopatra's Needle arrived in New York Harbor in November 1880 and was eventually erected in Central Park in 1884, becoming a cherished symbol of the cultural connection between Egypt and the United States.
