1838 1894 Claimant Comte Ferdinand Grandson Orleans Philippe Throne Unsuccessful Albert
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, we see Louis-Philippe-Albert, Comte de Paris (1838-1894), the unsuccessful claimant to the French throne. The Comte de Paris was the eldest son of Ferdinand, Duc de Orleans, and the grandson of Louis Philippe, the last King of the French monarchy before the Second French Republic. Born in 1838, Louis-Philippe-Albert was raised in exile in Belgium after the fall of the Bourbon monarchy in 1848. Despite his royal lineage, he lived a relatively quiet and private life, devoting himself to his military career and his family. However, in 1871, following the Franco-Prussian War and the establishment of the German Empire, Louis-Philippe-Albert saw an opportunity to reclaim the French throne. He declared himself the rightful King of the French and began to rally support among the French monarchists. Despite his ambitious plans, the Comte de Paris' claim to the throne was not widely recognized, and he faced significant opposition from both the French government and the German Empire. In the end, his efforts to regain the throne were unsuccessful, and he spent the remainder of his life in exile in England. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures the Comte de Paris in his later years. He is shown here in a formal portrait, dressed in the uniform of a French army officer, a reminder of his military background and his connection to the French monarchy. Despite his failed attempt to reclaim the throne, Louis-Philippe-Albert remains an intriguing figure in French history, a symbol of the end of the Bourbon monarchy and the beginning of the modern French Republic.
