EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts Philippe, Duke of Orleans (1674-1723), a pivotal figure in French history during the early 18th century. Born in Paris, Philippe was the grandson of King Louis XIV and the younger brother of the regent, Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. When his nephew, King Louis XV, came of age in 1715, Philippe was appointed as his regent, a position he held until 1723. As a skilled military commander, Philippe played a significant role in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), leading French forces to several victories against the Austrians and the British. His military prowess earned him the respect of his soldiers and the admiration of his people. However, Philippe's tenure as regent was marked by political instability and financial difficulties. He faced opposition from powerful factions within the French court, including the powerful Cardinal Dubois, who sought to undermine his authority. Despite these challenges, Philippe managed to maintain order and preserve the monarchy during a time of turmoil. This print captures the image of a confident and capable leader, dressed in the uniform of a French soldier, with a sword at his side and a determined expression on his face. The inscription at the bottom of the print reads "Philippe, Duc d'Orléans, Régent de France," emphasizing his important role as regent during a crucial period in French history. Philippe's legacy as a military leader and regent continues to be celebrated in French history, and this print serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to the country during a time of political and military upheaval.
