EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment of bravery and determination of Police Constable Henry William Stephens, as he pursued a gunman in Bromley, Kent, in March 1957. At just 28 years old, P.C. Stephens had already proven himself to be a dedicated and courageous officer. During the incident, the gunman opened fire, striking P.C. Stephens in the mouth. Despite the severe injury, P.C. Stephens did not falter. With unwavering resolve, he followed the gunman for an impressive 40 yards before tackling him to the ground, thereby putting an end to the dangerous situation. For his exceptional bravery, P.C. Stephens was awarded the George Cross, the highest gallantry decoration for civilians in the United Kingdom. The George Cross was presented to him by Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace in 1958. This historical photograph is a testament to the courage and self-sacrifice of P.C. Henry William Stephens, a true hero of the Kent Police Force and the people of Bromley. The image, taken in the aftermath of the incident, shows P.C. Stephens standing proudly, his uniform stained with blood, but his spirit unbroken. The photograph is a powerful reminder of the risks that police officers take every day to keep our communities safe.
