EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning engraving is a beautiful representation of the Arabian leopard, Panthera pardus nimr, also known as the Arabian leopard, Arabian panther, or Arabian leopard cat. This endangered big cat is native to the Arabian Peninsula and is a subspecies of the common leopard. The Arabian leopard is characterized by its golden-tan coat with black spots and black stripes on its limbs. This majestic feline is a carnivore and a member of the Felidae family, specifically the Felinae subfamily and the Pantherinae subgroup. The Arabian leopard was first described by the German zoologist Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg in his work "Symbolae Physicae," published between 1828 and 1833. This engraving is from the section on mammals, specifically plate 17. Ehrenberg was a prominent figure in the field of zoology and made significant contributions to the study of invertebrates, but his work on mammals was also noteworthy. The Arabian leopard is currently listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Threats to their population include habitat loss, poaching, and conflict with humans. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this magnificent creature and ensure its survival for future generations. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and majesty of the Arabian leopard and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting endangered species. It is a valuable historical record of this magnificent animal and a reminder of the rich natural heritage of the Arabian Peninsula.
