Penrhyn tomb, Llandegai Church, North Wales

Detail of the Penrhyn tomb in Llandegai (or Llandygai) Church, near Bangor, Caernarvonshire (now Gwynedd), North Wales. The tomb was sculpted by Richard Westmacott for the first Lord and Lady Penrhyn, who were prominent in the development of the Welsh slate industry. The statues are of a quarryman and a peasant woman, somewhat idealised in Grecian style costume, and described by Eric Hobsbawm as the earliest sculpted proletarians. There is a bas relief of cherubs splitting slates, and a long inscription below them

EDITORS COMMENTS
This detail from the Penrhyn tomb in Llandegai Church, located near Bangor in the historic county of Caernarvonshire (now Gwynedd), North Wales, showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the monument sculpted by renowned British sculptor, Richard Westmacott. Commissioned for the first Lord and Lady Penrhyn, this monument is a testament to their significant contributions to the development of the Welsh slate industry. The statues, carved in marble, depict a quarryman and a peasant woman, both dressed in somewhat idealised Grecian style costumes. These figures, described by historian Eric Hobsbawm as the earliest sculpted proletarians, serve as a unique commemoration of the working class during the Industrial Revolution. The quarryman, with his chisel in hand, represents the hardworking laborers who toiled in the mines, while the peasant woman symbolizes the women who supported the mining communities. The bas relief of cherubs splitting slates above the statues adds an ethereal touch to the monument, reflecting the importance of the slate industry to the region. The long inscription below the figures is a poignant reminder of the lives and accomplishments of the Penrhyns. This monument, with its historical significance and artistic merit, stands as a testament to the aristocracy's recognition of the working class during a time of rapid industrialization. The Penrhyn tomb, with its quarryman and peasant woman, serves as a unique and intriguing blend of history, art, and social commentary.
