EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Philippe Petain (1856-1951), a prominent French military and political figure, during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of the French Army in April 1916. Petain is best known for his role in the defense of Verdun during World War I, which became a symbol of French resistance and endurance in the face of German aggression. Born in Blesle, France, Petain rose through the ranks of the French military, serving in various capacities throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He gained a reputation as a skilled military strategist and tactician, and was known for his unwavering dedication to his troops and the French cause. During the Battle of Verdun, which lasted from February to December 1916, Petain implemented a defensive strategy designed to wear down the German army through attrition. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, but ultimately proved to be a turning point in the war, as the French were able to hold their ground and prevent a potential German breakthrough. After the war, Petain served as the High Commissioner of Algeria and later became the Prime Minister of France in 1940, following the country's defeat by the Germans. However, Petain's collaborationist government was controversial, and he was later tried and convicted of treason after the liberation of France in 1944. He spent the remainder of his life under house arrest before passing away in 1951. This print, from a supplement to a French journal, provides a glimpse into the public perception of Petain during his military career, highlighting his role as a national hero and respected military commander.
