EDITORS COMMENTS
La Mola: A Deserted Fortification Guarding Mahon Harbour, Menorca, Spain (2010) La Mola, a once formidable military fortification, stands as a silent sentinel at the entrance to Mahon Harbour in Menorca, Spain. This impressive structure, now a relic of the past, is a testament to the strategic importance of the harbour throughout history. The Loop Holed Gallery, a significant part of La Mola, stretches approximately 400 metres along the coastline. This fortification, with its distinctive arched windows and thick walls, was built in the late 18th century to defend against potential invaders. The fortress, which was named Fortaleza de la Reina Isabel II in honour of Queen Isabella II of Spain, was designed to protect Mahon Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. The military use of La Mola came to an end in the late 20th century, leaving the once bustling fortress deserted and abandoned. The fortifications, now a ruin, are a haunting reminder of the past. The Loop Holed Gallery, with its intricate architecture and maze-like corridors, is particularly noteworthy. The gallery's name comes from the unique looped holes in the walls, which were used to house cannons. Despite its derelict state, La Mola remains an impressive sight. The ruins, bathed in the golden light of the Mediterranean sun, are a popular attraction for tourists and history enthusiasts alike. The fortification's rich history and architectural significance make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the beautiful island of Menorca.
