Nestled among the cobblestone streets of Paris's Left Bank, Shakespeare and Company Bookshop has been a haven for literature lovers since its inception in 1951. At the helm of this literary sanctuary was George Whitman, an American expatriate who dedicated his life to the promotion of literature and the arts. In this evocative photograph, taken in 1988, Whitman is seen in his element, surrounded by towering stacks of books in his quaint, old-world shop.
