EDITORS COMMENTS
Nestled amidst the intellectual and artistic hub of Paris's Left Bank, Shakespeare and Company Bookshop has been a sanctuary for literature lovers since its inception in 1951. The proprietor of this literary haven, George Whitman, is seen in this 1988 photograph, surrounded by towering shelves filled with old English books. With a warm smile and welcoming demeanor, Whitman, who passed away in 2011, was known for his generosity towards writers and travelers. He would often invite them to live in the shop in exchange for working a few hours a day. Whitman's dedication to literature and the arts was recognized in 2006 when he was awarded the Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. This prestigious French honor is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and literature. The Shakespeare and Company Bookshop, with its antiquarian collection and bohemian atmosphere, continues to be a beloved institution in Paris, attracting visitors from around the world who seek solace in the pages of a good book.
