EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration by Neave Parker depicts a Plesiosaur, an enigmatic marine reptile that once thrived in the Mesozoic Era, approximately 191 million to 66 million years ago. Plesiosaurs were a part of the larger group of reptiles known as Sauropterygians, characterized by their elongated necks and four limbs, adapted for swimming in the open ocean. The Plesiosaur in this illustration is a representative of the Plesiosauria suborder, which became extinct around 65 million years ago, coinciding with the catastrophic K-T extinction event. With its large, triangular head and powerful, paddle-like limbs, this prehistoric creature would have been a formidable inhabitant of the ancient seas. Neave Parker's illustration captures the essence of the Plesiosaur's mysterious allure, transporting us back to a time when these enigmatic creatures ruled the marine realm. The daytime scene, with the sun casting a warm glow over the water, adds to the serene and otherworldly atmosphere. As we gaze upon this illustration, we are reminded of the rich history of life on Earth, and the incredible diversity of organisms that have graced our planet throughout the Phanerozoic Con, or the "age of fossils," which began 541 million years ago. The Plesiosaur, a diapsid reptile, is a testament to the remarkable adaptations that allowed creatures to thrive in various habitats, from land to sea, throughout the Mesozoic Era and beyond.
