Plesiosaurs were a part of the larger group of reptiles known as Sauropterygians, characterized by their elongated necks and four limbs, adapted for swimming in the open ocean. The Plesiosaur in this illustration is a representative of the Plesiosauria suborder, which became extinct around 65 million years ago, coinciding with the catastrophic K-T extinction event.
