EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 15th-century illustration, the esteemed Podesta, or chief magistrate of a city-state, is depicted in grandeur, surrounded by the trappings of power and authority. The handcolored print, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, is an exquisite example of historical costumes from the 12th to 15th centuries, as featured in the renowned publication, "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries," published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1860. The Podesta is dressed in a richly textured brocade simar, a long, open robe with wide sleeves, adorned with intricate gold and silk embroidery. Beneath the simar, he wears a cassock, a long, loose-fitting garment, reaching down to his ankles. The Podesta completes his ensemble with a tall, conical bonnet, a pair of white gloves, and a heavy gold chain around his neck, symbolizing his high rank. At his side stands a page, dressed in the fashion of the time, wearing a tall, pointed hat, a doublet, odd-colored stockings, and a sword at his side. The page's hat is reminiscent of the hats worn in the famous frescoes of Pinturicchio, a 15th-century Italian painter. The Podesta's regal bearing and the page's attentive demeanor convey a sense of order and stability, reflecting the important role of the Podesta in maintaining peace and justice within the city-state. The intricate details of their clothing, expertly rendered through the handcolored lithograph process, offer a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and style of the 15th century. This image is a testament to the rich history and artistry of the past, and a reminder of the enduring allure of historical costumes and their stories.
