EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Poison Ivy and Poison Sumac: A Warning from the Past" This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases two notorious plants that have long posed a threat to human health: Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) and Poison Sumac (Rhus vernix). Poison Ivy (1), depicted on the left, is characterized by its glossy green leaves, which often grow in clusters of three. The plant's alternate, palmate leaves, with each leaflet having three lobes, are a common identifier. The plant's toxic properties are derived from urushiol, an oily resin that causes an allergic reaction when it comes into contact with human skin. Symptoms of poison ivy exposure include itching, blisters, and a rash. Poison Sumac (2), on the right, is distinguished by its large, white, berry-like clusters and smooth, greenish-yellow bark. The plant's leaves are also palmate, but they have more lobes, typically seven to eleven. Poison sumac releases urushiol through its leaves, roots, and stems, making contact with any part of the plant potentially harmful. Both Poison Ivy and Poison Sumac have been known to cause discomfort and illness for centuries. This historical illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of identifying these plants and avoiding contact with them to prevent exposure and the subsequent allergic reactions. This engraving, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, not only showcases the botanical accuracy of the time but also highlights the significance of plant education in preventing potential harm. The image invites us to appreciate the beauty of nature while also acknowledging the potential risks it may pose.
