Praise-God Barbon, also known as Barebones (circa 1596-1679), is depicted in this historical print from the late 18th century. Born as Simon Baker in London, Barbon later adopted the name "Praise-God" after experiencing a religious conversion. He became a leather-seller and a religious enthusiast, gaining a reputation for his fervent piety and charismatic preaching. In 1653, during the Commonwealth period in England, Barbon was elected as a Member of Parliament in the "Barebones Parliament," so named due to the large number of religious extremists among its members. This parliament, which lasted for only two months, was an attempt by the military ruler Oliver Cromwell to establish a more puritanical government. Despite his brief tenure in Parliament, Barbon left a lasting impact on English history. He is remembered for his passionate speeches and his unwavering commitment to his religious beliefs. This print, created around 1750, captures the essence of Barbon's piety and zeal, with his hands raised in prayer and his eyes closed in devotion.
