This striking photograph captures President Grover Cleveland and his cabinet, including Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks, gathered in the White House on July 9, 1885. Cleveland, a Democrat from New York, assumed the presidency for the second time in 1893 after serving as president from 1885 to 1889. Hendricks, a Democrat from Indiana, was Cleveland's running mate in the 1884 election and became vice president upon Cleveland's re-election. The cabinet members in this image include, from left to right, in the back row, Secretary of State Thomas F. Bayard, Secretary of the Treasury John G. Carlisle, Postmaster General William R. Day, and Attorney General Richard Olney. In the front row are Secretary of the Navy Benjamin F. Trumbull, Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln, and Secretary of the Interior Lucius Q. C. Lamar. This photograph offers a glimpse into the political landscape of the late 19th century, as Cleveland navigated a contentious political climate and faced challenges such as the Panic of 1893 and the Pullman Strike. Hendricks, unfortunately, did not serve long as vice president, as he died in office on November 25, 1885, just six months after this photograph was taken. Cleveland continued to serve as president until 1897, making him the only president in U.S. history to serve two non-consecutive terms.
